It has truly been a remarkably wet couple of seasons, with some of the wettest conditions I’ve ever encountered at the cave. Managing to keep the pads dry and clean proved to be an ongoing challenge, particularly if one neglected to stack them properly once done.

Additionally, the roof developed several leaks in numerous spots, a phenomenon I had never witnessed before. Despite this, miraculously, 99% of the holds remained dry. However, the overall humidity often exceeded the norm due to the excess moisture.

The substantial amount of water in the ground significantly increased the potential for prolonged runoff. With rain occurring every 2-3 days, the upper section, and sometimes the entirety, of ‘Major Lightweight’ would become completely soaked.

However, when only the top half was wet, which was nearly always the case, I quickly devised a practical solution: a beach towel, ladder, fan, and patience. Drying the top section with the towel and then draping it over the top redirected the running water away from the holds, allowing them to slowly and mostly dry out over the next hour. This process was aided by strategically placing an Ozito/Makita Hybrid Fan to expedite the drying of the main left-hand edge.

Season after season, new substantial challenges emerged, from travel restrictions to unprecedented weather patterns. Yet, with practice comes mastery, and since I genuinely enjoy climbing here, I opted to apply creative solutions and embrace surprises.

As I grew more comfortable with the technicalities of ‘Centrelink Sponsorship’, I honed a more manageable resting position on the big rail. This adjustment significantly contributed to the final boulder’s difficulty, as it reduced the full-body pump. However, my whole body & even my thighs were undeniably fatigued on some attempts!

Progress came through consistent practice, and without expectation, I found myself grappling with the damp and wet top section, clinging to the final flat, wet jugs with a mix of nervousness and determination. Thankfully, on this memorable day, a fellow climber came to the rescue with extra chalk and pads, enabling me to navigate to the top with greater confidence. Thanks, Campbell, your assistance was truly appreciated!

This climb was definitely a step up from ‘Turbo Deluxe’ and one for the ages.

Original vision from Byron Glover, now concluded.
