Functional Training 2024

As the development of training continues, I reflect on the process and progress.
What is functional training?

This is indeed the question that I circle back to the most as I train to improve and maintain balance.

The importance of balance is paramount when pursuing a sport such as climbing that can and often inevitably does lead to muscle imbalances & therefore a higher associated risk of injury.

Pull, pull, pull, must be counterbalanced by push push push.
By no means doesn’t his mean you need to become an olympic weight lifter, but rather a seeker of body symmetry & the balance of muscles for greater health & wellbeing.

It is well proven that balanced muscles:
a: perform better
– this means that your pull capacity can continue to improve at a more steady rate.

b: reduce injury potential
– balanced muscles are far less likely to be susceptible to injury due to imbalance.

Balanced muscles will also perform better in all aspects of life, period!

So how does one apply a range of training to improve muscle balance?

1. Start slowly, learn about your body, if rushed and done incorrectly injury can result.
2. Compound movements are the most common applied to balance climbing.
3. Get professional advice, ie. join strength classes or get a PT.
4. Enjoy the journey, be consistent.
5. Know when to train & when to rest, ie. training seasons vs maintenance seasons.
